Understanding Distributed Document Capture

With Oracle Document Capture, the input points to ODC are limited by the Import Systems that you would setup or the actual ODC desktops that you would configure. Oracle “Distributed” Document Capture (ODDC) removes that limitation for you and provide options to have a web enabled scanning and batches ingestion mechanism.

As I keep telling, figure out your use cases first, put it down on paper, mull over it for some time before you actually start installing/configuring stuff. Becomes easier for you to configure/enable the product options, rather than wondering , ok I have installed the product, now what???

ODDC setup consists of Internet Information Server (IIS) which serves the “Webpages” directory, the ODC itself, and the database ofcourse. ODDC provides options for you to configure scan profiles with or without indexing options, along with committing or just “Sending” the batch over to the server for further processing.

Follow these steps to install/configure and test your environment.
Step 1) Install the downloaded software
Step 2) Enable IIS
Step 3) Configure website in IIS, define port number (ex:82) and site context (ex:odcweb)
Step 4) Create separate user in odc, a non-admin user, which will be used to connect through the web applet of ODDC
Step 5) Start ODDC service, from windows services
Step 6) Keep IIS running, dont close it
Step 7) Access webCaptureAdmin: http://localhost:82/odcweb/WebCaptureAdmin.html
Step 8) Setup scan profile in admin screen, as below:

Various options that you could setup for the scan profile as below, depending on your project specific needs.

Scanning Type
1- Scan Only
2- Scan and Index Documents
3- Scan and Index Batches

Commit Method:
1- Commit
2- Do Not Commit
3- Commit Using Commit Server

If you wish to allow user to provide Indexing options, use the ones that you would have already setup in ODC File cabinet.

Step 9) Access ODDC as a normal user: http://localhost:82/odcweb/WebCapture.asp
Use same user created in ODC to login.

This much info along with the official documentation should be enough for you to get started.
Will provide a sample use case to test this setup in the next one.
